Camel hair, from Bedouin tradition to the modern mattress

From the very first appearances of the nomadic Arab peoples, camels had their own special place in the daily life of man. A reliable means of transport, with great resistance to desert conditions, and at the same time a source of valuable goods for daily survival, were factors that gave the Arabian camel its extraordinary importance.

From those early times, until today, entire peoples have relied on camels for clothing, transportation, and food. What has changed are the conditions under which camel wool is transformed into a commodity with an even wider range of uses, greater safety in its use and better quality in the treatment of these precious animals themselves.

The first uses of camel hair were usually limited to clothing and the creation of shelters for nomadic peoples. And this is because their properties are such that they can make a difference in the particularly demanding conditions of the desert climate. But what do these properties of camel hair mean for modern layering?

Camel wool has excellent thermostatic properties. This means that it is not a good conductor of heat, thus keeping its temperature constant for a much longer period of time than other materials, unaffected by external factors. Just as its natural hair protects the camel’s body from the extremely high temperatures of the day and the extremely low temperatures of the night in the desert, it ensures the exact same function for the mattress.

A mattress, any sleeping product, filled with camel wool, maintains a constant natural temperature for a longer period of time, without heating its wearer during the summer months, and without being an uncomfortably cold object during the cold months.

Maintaining a normal and pleasant temperature has two main benefits: The first is clearly related to the user experience, as pleasant conditions enhance the quality of sleep and allow the body to relax in the best possible way. The second benefit has to do with sleep hygiene, as maintaining normal temperature levels prevent the growth of microorganisms in the mattress, since at the same time they ensure the easy removal of moisture that could contribute to this condition within the mattress. This means, in addition, that camel’s wool is the most ideal material for those who face the issue of sweating during sleep, as the maintenance of temperature and the removal of moisture prevent both the contamination of the mattress and the sweating itself its user.

In additional features, camel wool is extremely soft and light. Thus, it allows us to synthesize on it all the hardness properties of the mattress, creating the excellent result. The special processing makes the material completely safe and extremely friendly, upgrading even more the quality of the final result, but also the enjoyment of sleep.
